Enameling Basics & Beyond
November 15- 29, 2021- weekly every Monday
10am-12pm
Vitreous Enameling is the process of fusing a thin layer of powdered glass to the surface of metal in either a kiln or using a torch. This technique may be used to enhance the beauty of the metal and also to add color to the surface.
In this virtual course students will start their journey at the very beginning of the enameling process and will work through several exercises to build a solid foundation for this beloved metalsmithing technique. If you have sketchbooks full of color this course will allow you to translate those into enamel. Understanding the processes and the “whys” behind techniques will be a major element of this course. Allowing you to finish feeling confident in your own abilities and knowledge.
Class demos will cover how to properly prepare the metal and enamel for the process as well as several application methodologies. This course will focus on working with powder enamels, sifting, wet packing, and using some handmade stencils. Each demonstration will offer participants new information that can then be applied to their own enameling practice.
Opaque and transparent enamels will be used together in this course so participants leave with an understanding of the differences, how to get the most out of each type of enamel, and ways to use them together to achieve color transitions and blending.
